As much as I love and adore Balenciaga's leather motorcycle jacket, the sky high price of $2595.00 kills me. It is on my UHG (Ultra Holy Grail) list. It is seen on many celebrities such as Salma Hayek, Jennifer Aniston, Katie Holmes, and that's naming just a few. Of course, I've always wanted to invest in such a jacket, but ultimately could not afford this price tag as it is 2.5K costs even more than most of the bags!
This jacket is still very popular among the fashion forums, and has been popular for the last few years. It's a wonderful style since you can dress it up or down with almost any outfit! It can add a nice chic touch to a plain top and a pair of jeans.
So as I was searching for a more affordable alternative, I stumbled on this lovely jacket on SSense.
Note the shocking similarities?
The jacket on the brunette model is made by True Religion and it's also called the Moto Jacket. The price is much less at $720. I'm thinking of getting this one, so I will report back with modeling pics if I do end up purchasing.

Ooh they're really similar. The True Religion ones amazing. I love the Balenciaga one too but the price is wayy too much. For me anyways!xx
ReplyDeleteI've seen HGBags selling Bal leather jackets for a good discount. Although for me, that is still about $1k too much lol. The True Religion is a great dupe and the leather looks divine as well. Can't wait to see a review if you get it!
ReplyDeletecopied exactly the Bal jacket moto style but you can see the leather difference...True Religion leather is much thinner that's why the texture looks rough crumply, glossy and stiff. The fit is also very close/tight fitting to the body and the sleeve length is way too short. The Bal fit is tight fitting as well (depending on size you got) but the leather texture looks excellent crumply and more importantly, length of the Bal jacket sleeves go half-way to the length of the hand especially for us, short girls.
ReplyDeleteBut the price definitely is unbeatable. But the only problem is the True Religion jacket is a Bal wannabee like a China copy of the Bal bags.....
Don't want to say this but just being honest.
Oh my... look at that awfully thin legs!
ReplyDeletei still love the balenciaga one the most!
ReplyDelete@Anonymous 9:54, thanks for your insight! :) I can't really comment on the leather texture since I haven't seen either IRL, but agree it does appear that the TR does has some shine to it. I did some quick research and did find that Balenciaga was not the first ones to create the motorcycle jacket style. It's more of a generic style that was originally created in the 1920's.

Sorry if this post offended you, as it was just a nice way to find a less expensive alternative for those who love the style but cannot afford Balenciaga's price tag. :)
The Motorcycle bag design that Bal has created is definitely all their own, so I don't think any other alternative would ever come close! lol.
@Anonymous 11:09: Now that's what I call model skinny... lol.
@Treva: I love Bal's too the most! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm just too poor to afford one right now. lol. I ended up not getting the TR version, as I have a completely diff winter jacket coming in the mail not even made of leather lol.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI don't say that Bal owns the exclusive right to manufacturing moto jackets nor was it the very first one to do so but the details of the back and sides and even front part...TR copied to the last detail except that they are not so accommodating on the sleeve length and limited choice of leather....
I wasn't offended by your post at all.....this same statement you made "just a nice way to find a less expensive alternative for those who love the style but cannot afford Balenciaga's price tag. :)" also applies to those who want to own a Balenciaga bag but can't afford to do so will also just have to settle for the China or Korea copy.
so maybe buying the TR is doing just that.
If you want a less expensive moto jacket, then go for a honest-to-goodness genuine moto jacket from another brand that it is unique and beautiful on its own without trying to pass as something else.
You have some good points. It's a tougher call on clothing since trends and designs are copied and repeated throughout the years.
ReplyDeleteI think it's ok to get the jacket, since the moto jacket is now considered a generic style. Bal can't say they've created this all on their own (details like the Napoleonic collar and asymmetrical zipper), and maybe TR has taken fashion cues from Bal or even somewhere else, don't know for sure. I do know the moto jacket is a huge hit this season and I see very similar styles by other brands as well.
Bags may be a different story because they are actually stealing the original design by Bal and some fakers actually use the Balenciaga name which is illegal and wrong. That wouldn't sit right with me at all.
I do like your constructive criticism though. It's making me think hard about it.
This is just a diff opinion from me, but I think we can agree to disagree? :)
Hi again,
ReplyDeleteit's just that TR really copied all the details, front, back, and most notably, top back/bottom edge and sides that is the Bal moto signature.....
they could have just copied the front part (as it is a generic moto style with all zippers and extended collars and assymetrical zipper placement)
BUT at least have the decency to create their own back design.
yup, let's agree to disagree.
The Bal jacket is sooo beautiful and the TR one looks like a great alternative! Definitely looking forward to some modeling pics if you wind up getting it :)
ReplyDeleteLove this jacket!
